STEADY AS SHE GOES
Catalyst has been established as the leading Perl MVC framework for at least five years now. It's installed base runs to hundreds of sites. It is proven. It has a large and active community both on IRC and on the mailing lists. There are even books.
It has also proved to be more suited to larger projects than to very small ones. It is a serious product for serious companies with serious projects which will have serious consequences if they are late or buggy.
The Catalyst community ran an advent calendar for six years, from 2005 to 2010 inclusive. However, this has had a downside. It is difficult to be proven and to come up with new and trendy ideas the whole time. Much of what needs to be said has already been said. It isn't possible to make as much noise as the new kids on the block for whom everything is novel and exciting.
This has led to a mood of introspection. There have been musings about how to introduce inversion of control in a way which is backwards compatible. At times it sounds as if the installed base is a handicap and the important thing is to have something new to say in the advent calendar.
Catalyst is the mainstream Perl MVC framework. It's large installed based, large community, quality support and suitability for large projects are strengths. Let's use the remaining slots in the advent calendar to demonstrate that it is widely used on serious projects.
BACKGROUND
Motortrak began using Catalyst in early 2010 when we were looking to re-write a prototype system so that it could be rolled out nationally and possibly internationally. We have invested approximately 5 man-years into the project. That makes it a serious project. That makes it a Catalyst project.
The system provides an online service booking facility for owners of a particular brand of up-market motor vehicles. Our client is the chain of official retailers (garages) for this manufacturer. The users are in one of two categories: the first are the owners of the vehicles, the second are the staff of the chain at local, retailer and national level.
The prototype catered for a single UK-based retailer. The project plan called for the system to be re-written to incorporate the lessons learned from the prototype and to be expandable so retailers could be added singly or in groups until all 200 retailers in the UK network were included.
The was also the real possibility that the system could be sold into the USA, mainland Europe and/or Australia. This meant that the system had to be sufficiently modular to allow it to be skinned for these markets or for large chunks of it to be re-used in sibling products.
The project also had a disproportionate level of political sensitivity. The head of the chain of retailers had gone public in the industry press stating that an online service booking facility was the key objective of 2011. There would be severe consequences if the system was late or buggy. The components we chose had to be mainstream, not experimental.
The system has been live for nearly two years and phase 5b will be released shortly. Numerous other development phases are scheduled for 2013. Most of the UK retailers are now included, the rest will be included in early 2013.It is perceived as a success and is attracting interest from abroad.
WHY CATALYST?
As explained previously, we wanted a mainstream MVC framework well-suited to a medium-sized project. This immediately took us three-quarters of the way to choosing Catalyst. There was a lot of noise about Dancer and Mojolicious at the time, so we had a look at those as well.
Both products were very immature in early 2010. Dancer later released version two under the banner "Why I re-wrote everthing" which appeared to confirm our fears. It has since developed a good reputation for small projects, but ours isn't a small project.
We dismissed Mojolicious because it was very new and because it had been criticized at LPW. It has developed quite a good reputation since then. Catalyst's philosophy of fully utilising CPAN has much more intellectual appeal then Mojo's approach of re-writing everything. There remains a suspicision that once the enthusiasm born of having a new product as faded, Mojo will have created both a straight-jacket and a maintenance headache for itself. That said, we would certainly take Mojo more seriously if we were starting from scratch today.
COMPANION PRODUCTS
We tend to refer to the system as a Catalyst system but, of course, it isn't. It utilises Catalyst as its MVC framework but it uses numerous other Perl and non-Perl components.
We needed a mainstream templating system. There are numerous Perl templating systems, but there is only one which can reasonably be described as mainstream. We chose Template::Toolkit.
All Motortrak's products are Oracle-based, so that decision had been made for us. However, we did need a way of accessing it. We decided to use DBIx::Class, which is regarded as Perl's mainstream ORM (object-relational mapper) for the basic CRUD. We stayed with straight DBI for more complex SQL operations such as tree-walking.
Catalyst was at version 5.8 at the time and we have since upgraded to 5.9. This has automatically given us Moose and Plack. We were initially cautious about using Moose's features such as Roles. We have used them more as the project has progressed and we have become more aware of their usefulness.
The other Perl modules were deliberately chosen to be conservative. We used Params::Validate for checking method parameters and Data::FormValidator for validating request parameters.
We also implemented several project-wide QA policies. Our tests check that all modules have been run through perltidy. All methods must at least be mentioned in the POD. All modules must have been run through Perl::Critic on level three. (We had to disable the rule which doesn't recognise Params::Validate as a valid way of unpacking parameters.)
The front end is a mixture of HTML, CSS, Javascript anf Jquery.
WHAT WE DID LEARN?
The system has been a huge success, so we obviously got most of it right.
Fat controllers. We read the POD, we read the book, we chuckled at the diagram of the fat controller. We had a team of experienced programmers, we wouldn't make a mistake like that.
We did. When the pressure is on, the obvious place for the logic is the controller. It's the wrong place. The analogy with an eating disorder is a good one. Once the controllers get fat, it is difficult to slim them down. More logic creeps back in and they put on weight.
Logic in a controller is difficult to unit test because there is an assumption that it has been compiled into a Catalyst process. This means the unit tests start to look more like end-to-end tests involving firing up LWP or Selenium and firing requests into the webserver.
We found that with fat controllers came a lot of tightly-coupled interaction between the controllers. This was clumsy and made testing even harder.
Code within a controller cannot be re-used outside Catalyst. You can't use it in a cron job or a cgi script.
I know what I've said there has been said many times before, but it's worth saying again. We thought we were too experienced to make that mistake.
A more subtle issue concerns fat models. It is important to have thin controllers and fat models. However, this does not mean the Catalyst model modules should be fat. They should be thin as well. They should be wrappers with allow standard Catalyst-independent Perl modules to be plugged into Catalyst. These standard modules should do most of the work. They can then be easily unit tested and easily re-used outside of Catalyst.
We didn't make the mistake of building fat Catalyst model modules.
Template::Toolkit was powerful and easy to use. No problems there.
DBIx::Class was brilliant for the simple CRUD operations and operations involving two or three tables. Far easier than using SQL directly. We did build one custom DBIx::Class module to run a complex SQL query. The documentation on how to do this was clear enough and the module worked. However, it was hard work and we stuck to SQL for the complex stuff after that.
One of our tasks if we ever get a quiet moment will be to go back and audit where we used DBIx::Class and where we used SQL. We will probably conclude that we should have used DBIx::Class more.
The decisions to use Params::Validate and Data::FormValidator were rock-solid. However, they are ageing modules and we would evaluate Module inline declarations and HTML::FormBuilder if we were starting from scratch now.
